This Sunday, 3/22/15 on “HOT 97 Street Soldiers with Lisa Evers,” we’re talking about:
“FRATERNITY RACE RANT: DOES THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE CRIME?”
You’ve seen the video of the Oklahoma University SAE students singing a racist rant on a bus, using the “N” word.
IS THIS THE TIP OF AN ICEBERG OF HATE?
The university president took swift action. He kicked the fraternity off campus and expelled the two main students involved.
Critics say this punishment is not enough. They believe the video is evidence of a racist culture of power and privilege that still exists, despite the unity we saw between students of all races in the many Garner/Michael Brown protests all over the country.
Campus free speech advocates say as hateful as the speech is, we need to be careful condemning it because it could suppress first amendment rights and dissenting opinions, as repugnant as they may be.
Now evidence is emerging that the issue of racist incidents on campuses is growing. Join us as we talk about this.
