Cheese Shops in New York City!

If all you require for sustenance in life are strong pongs and a sensational array of cheese varieties, there’s no shortage of establishments in New York City to accommodate your dairy-lust. Here’s a selection of some great places to go get a cheese fix.

Murray’s Cheese
254 Bleeker St
If you’re a turophile who has lived in the West Village for a while, then you undoubtedly already know about Murray’s- a cheese shop founded in 1940. Current owner Rob Kaufelt has such a passion for all things cheese that he’s traveled the globe finding new and delicious types to bring home to us. And it’s not just New Yorkers visiting this store (or Murray’s Grand Central market) that can take advantage of Kaufelt’s passion now. Murray’s website takes orders, will cater for parties and these exceptional cheeses are now distributed to supermarkets all over the country.

Earl’s Beer & Cheese
1259 Park Ave
If the apocalypse happened tomorrow, what would you want to be stuffing your face with as the world ended? For Earl, it’s cheese and craft beer all the way, baby – or as the Earl’s website puts it: “CHEESEBEEROCALYPSE” (which is probably why beer cheese is an actual type of cheese on the menu here sometimes). Like the East Harlem venue for this bar and snack house, the menu is small but quirky. If you want a large array of options, this cheese shop on Park Avenue isn’t for you. But, as far as we’re concerned, when everything on offer is this exquisite and well thought out, it doesn’t matter that meal choices are somewhat limited.

East Village Cheese
40 3rd Ave
It may not be the best known ‘monger in town, but East Village Cheese is certainly the cheapest. You can find real bargains in here every day, on a wide selection (even imports), to the degree that it is often cheaper than a lot of supermarkets’ dairy aisles. E.V.C. is also fantastic for providing everything you could possibly need to go with all that delicious cheese – pasta, crackers, fresh olives, jam, you name it. This place is a lot more functional than fancy, but with these prices, who cares?

ABC Beer Co
96 Ave C
Sure, the name makes it sound like ABC Beer Co. is simply a beer bar. But if you can’t bring yourself to even go drinking without the promise of cheesy goodness on the side, this is the place for you. The beer selections are fantastic, sure, but the cheese boards alone are enough incentive to trek outside your luxury no-fee rental apartment. With a back patio perfect for summer afternoons and a very friendly batch of staff and regulars, ABC Beer Co. is the ideal drinking hole for cheese-enthusiasts.

Saxelby Cheesemongers
Essex Street Market – 120 Essex St
Visiting Saxelby is like wandering into a legit farm store. You half expect there to be a cow hiding in the back, wearing a neckerchief and stocking shelves. This tiny store can get over-crowded very easily, but the passionate people working here provide enthusiastic and highly knowledgeable service, if you’re willing to wait. (Tip: you should definitely wait – Anne Saxelby is bringing style back to American cheese.)
