Here is the quick version of this story, these two dudes were caught with weed, and a few weapons including a stolen gun. They could be locked up, and one of the charges would be a felony. However, the DA said that he does not want to ruin the lives of two young men who have worked really hard for their football careers.
I’m a bit torn on this one. With the recent super light sentencing of Brock Turner for raping an unconscious woman, there is a part of me that feels it’s only right that young men of color should also get a break when facing the law, but what precedent does this set?
Gun laws in Alabama are clearly different very different than they are here in NYC. Because of that, I’m slightly appalled that these guys are getting off so easy on weapons charges. But one has to consider the gun culture over there, as opposed to over here.
If I stepped out of my home with my gun loaded, and I was caught, my next blog post would probably be coming out in the year 2026. NYC is as anti gun as they come. In a place like Alabama, guns are as common as wearing a hat. It’s just not that big of a deal.
However, gun culture aside, we know that at least one of the guns was stolen. What if this gun was used to murder your 3 year old daughter? Would you still be willing to cut them a break? I know that we Blacks and Latinos usually have the book thrown at us, and more often than not we are treated unequally compared to our white counterparts. So I guess it is a good thing to see that the system is becoming somewhat fairer at times? Maybe? But I’m not entirely sure that we should be so forgiving of men in possession of stolen guns and drugs at the same time. That’s a really bad combination!
Here is what I will say in closing, I hope that these two fellas count their blessings and get their act together. If they do something like this again, or God forbid something worse, then they MUST be held accountable. Hopefully no innocents pay for the generosity of this D.A.
One final note, Brock Turner, you piece of crap, we haven’t forgotten about you or Aaron Persky!Follow @AngelRtalk
