New York Sports Club’s disgusting Wall Street facility.
Yesterday I decided that its time to get back into training. That’s how I operate, I’m fat and lazy, then one day I simply decide to get fit again.
Extremely crowded
I’ve been to this gym location before, I don’t recall loving or hating it either way, in fact I prefer the one on Water street but it’s been closed since Hurricane Sandy. I’ll have to check again to see if it’s open. In any case, this location left a very bad taste in my mouth today. The gym was ridiculously packed, all equipment was several people deep. The lockers were crowded but fortunately I managed to find one.
Yesterday reminded me of trying to use the Bally’s at 34th street, aka Penta. You would end up waiting 20 minutes or more simply for a locker to free up, it was dreadful. Eventually I managed to get in a short lifting workout followed by 35 minutes of moderate intensity cardio.
Filthy locker room and shower
Next comes the main point behind this post, the towels and the showers. A cesspool of germs that lead to a disgusting, filthy, nauseating experience.
The towels had some crusty black stuff on them, I tried several different ones and they all had it, just straight nasty!
One shower stall was missing a curtain, another was missing soap, and the few others were in use. So I did what any intelligent person wanting to take a shower would do, I grabbed the soap from the one missing a curtain and moved it over to the one missing soap. I then entered and began to shower.
The first thing I saw in there was a nasty booger on the wall, okay, that just plain old gross. Nasty people, just nasty.
Next as I continued to shower I encountered a big glop of blood and hair on one side of the shower. Okay, now this is getting dangerous for us. Blood that is stuck there? Means it’s been there awhile. WTF?
Then as if that wasn’t enough, I saw more blood in the shower. Oh man, now I started to feel like puking and my health compromised. In fact today I went to the doctor for a check up because this made me worry.
So yes, it felt nasty and I felt at risk for any number of diseases so I got out of that focker and dried myself as best I could with the non-nasty parts of my towel. I walked away from there feeling vulnerable and disgusted. That’s when I decided to take a picture and share this.
I had to wait for a guy to finish up in the same shower stall before I could get the picture, but I waited. This is just nasty and needs to be addressed. Equinox raised their prices on us this year, but they never had problems like this. If this continues I’m going to shop around for a new gym.
I think part of the problem is that the gym at Water street is still closed so all those fockers are coming to this one. That’s a problem because now you have all the bodies from that gym at this one as well. I always preferred that other location because it was much more quiet and less utilized than this one. But at present time I have no choice.
This was not a nice return to training for me. If not for my fortitude, I can easily see how a person could become discouraged from working out here because of the major crowds and the absolutely disgusting facilities.

Dude, why would you ever even attempt to shower at a gym? They are all nasty, and carry so many germs. Especially athletes foot. Just put a clean shirt and sweats in your gym bag with some baby powder to change into and shower at when you get home. I will never shower at a gym. That is taking your health at risk!

Word. That’s a good idea man. I think I’ll action it henceforth.
