Subway system, a clear and present danger.

I’m sure that all of you have by now heard about yet another person being pushed into the subway tracks in NYC. This is the second occurrence of this in nearly 1 month’s time.  I believe that all subway commuters are secretly afraid of the tracks and have a healthy respect for the danger that they pose. Yet, it is a regular part of life and we just make due. Most of us are probably desensitized to the real danger the tracks pose to human life.

I still recall a time when me and my friends were teens, running not only into the tracks, but across the tracks, tempting fate and risking our lives on so many levels. I still remember being in between train stops in the tunnels with my back against the maintenance platform holding on to that handle bar for dear life as the train zoomed past me, inches away from my body and face. I suppose because of experiences like this I’m not as afraid of the train and the tracks as I should be.

I do know of several people that lost their lives due to the trains. One of them thought surfing on top of the train car was a good idea, while the other thought walking in between cars while piss drunk was a good idea. Neither of them are still with us in this life.  I also know of a few friends that have life long limps, and other injuries for using the train as a sporting tool.

So yeah, I’m desensitized, however I’m no fool and I know that willingly jumping in and running across tracks, or going in between stations on the maintenance platform is quite different than being pushed unto the train tracks when off guard and unaware. Even the most experienced, agile person could be killed in this fashion.

So what are our options then? Precaution and safety. Maintaining a healthy respect and understanding that the train tracks and subway cars are dangerous.  Do not stand close to the edge of the platform and always remain aware of your surroundings. Let’s not take for granted that “no one” will dare do such a thing as push you into the tracks.  We saw that psychotic woman do it just yesterday and as of yet she’s still at large.

It can happen to anyone, anytime, so please stand clear of the platform edge and keep your street smarts about you when riding the trains!  Our condolences go out to all the friends and families of the folks that lost their lives due to these heinous, disgusting crimes.
