Does Time Go Faster As We Get Older?

One of the things that I have always been afraid of is our mortality as human beings. Knowing that I am now approaching what could be considered ‘middle aged’ terrifies me. I was always the youngest guy among my coworkers- the baby of the bunch. Now I have been replaced in that role by others, and I am a father and a provider. Wow, how time flies!

This infographic by Maximilian Kiener, previously seen on Lifehacker, illustrates this phenomenon  beautifully.

I have always being fascinated by superheroes and other fictitious characters, such as vampires, because of their immortality. Is it just me, or have you also noticed that as you become older, time tends to go by so much faster? I always thought that maybe something was wrong with me and that this was just something that I experienced. However, after examining this infographic, I have come to the conclusion that I am not alone in experiencing this.

It actually makes a lot of sense: it is very simple mathematics. The older you get, the less time you have left in proportion to the rest of your life. At 5 years old, a year is 20% of your life. With each passing year, the percentage changes. It is quite fascinating really. I never thought about it in terms of math- I just noticed how quickly time was moving.
