Viva Loisaidafest!

I’m relatively new to a lot of places, terms, people and events when it comes to Puerto Rico’s history, and Latino history overall. That’s why I named this site “Finding Latino,” I will be documenting my journey of discovery.

I don’t even know how to dance salsa. Though to be totally honest with you guys, I’m not a big fan of that style of music. There are only a few salsa songs that I enjoy listening to. Sorry, it’s not my fault, asi es como sali! No me culpen a mi! This is one of the songs I really like! Este tema es por el Colombiano, Joe Arroyo!

Pues asi son las cosas. Suset and Maria Laboy invited me to attend the Loisaidafest Media event, and after such an amazing experience at the #boricuasonline event there was no way that I could miss this. So I accepted and attended. The media event was a lot of fun, they had some food, great music, dancing, and lots of Latino culture. I did almost get myself knocked out by Maria Laboy, and Luis Guzman when I told them that I didn’t know what “Bomba y Plena” was. I asked Luis if he knew what plena was, he responded with “do you know what bacalao is?” So my very first lesson at The Loisaida Center was learning what plena is.

During this event I learned about the Loisaida center, and it’s long rich history in the lower east side. It was a great event and set the stage for the main loisaida festival! For the festival itself, I took a trip out with my wife. It is a bit of a ride for us coming in from Queens, but I really wanted to attend this event. The festival itself was very cool. I saw quite a few people that I met at the media event, and others that I know from open mics, and so on. There was food, music, and culture! A great overall event. If you have never been, you really should check out the Loisaida center, they are doing a lot of good for the latino community on the lower east side! Check out some video and pictures of the day!
