Helping an Older Lady Through a Panic Attack: A Story of Compassion and Support

10/11/2016, 7:58 am Angel Rodriguez 0

I helped an older lady feeling shaky and in the middle of a panic attack cross the street. Taking a few minutes to listen and stay with her made a big difference. If you see someone struggling, pause and offer support—it truly matters.

Fitness Professionals Must Be In Shape: Why Leading by Example Matters

10/11/2016, 7:15 am Angel Rodriguez 1

I’ve noticed some gym instructors in NYC who don’t seem to reflect the fitness lifestyle they promote. While knowledge matters, maintaining visible fitness helps build trust and respect. Fitness professionals should embody the health and vitality they encourage in others to truly lead by example.

Declining Barbershop Service: Why Consistency Matters for Loyal Customers

10/11/2016, 7:01 am Angel Rodriguez 0

I’ve noticed barbers start off great but slip on quality after a few visits. Missing stray hairs or uneven fades become common. If you want loyal clients, treat every haircut like it’s your first time. Consistency and attention to detail matter more than titles or fame.

We Went To Blockbuster: A Nostalgic Memory from Forest Hills

10/06/2016, 7:08 am Angel Rodriguez 0

Sometimes small memories, like visiting Blockbuster with an ex, bring unexpected comfort. As I prepare for my NYSC instructor audition, I reflect on those special moments. Even though some memories fade, the feelings they hold remain powerful and meaningful to me.

Bug In The Office: A Comical Roach Encounter That Feels Like The TV Show

10/03/2016, 7:57 am Angel Rodriguez 0

One afternoon at work, a bug showed up on a painting, turning a simple office day into a comical showdown. After failed Lysol attempts, we took it down, crushed the bug, and declared our workspace bug-free. Definitely felt like a scene straight out of The Office!

10/03/2016, 7:34 am Angel Rodriguez 0

NYC’s MTA rules say dogs must be in bags to enter train stations, but this woman’s creative approach takes it to a whole new level. Her clever idea is honestly too good not to be allowed. It’s funny, inventive, and we hope it’s real!

Episode 116 – BJJ Safety, Abuse Concerns, and Changing Attitudes in the Jiu Jitsu Community
by@Angelrtalk

Some time ago, I wrote a post saying I wasn’t completely comfortable with my wife training jiu jitsu with men. The reaction from many practitioners was intense. I was called insecure, and some people insisted that abuse simply doesn’t happen in the BJJ community.

Since then, I’ve seen more and more posts and discussions acknowledging that jiu jitsu has had issues with grooming and abuse, and that these problems have existed for years. It’s been interesting to watch that shift. When I first shared my concerns, a lot of higher belts and experienced practitioners dismissed my perspective. Now, many of those same types of voices openly recognize that these problems are real.

That contrast is hard to ignore. I talk about it in more detail in episode 116.

I saw something similar during my time in the military. In environments that are heavily male dominated, with very few women, the risk of misconduct can increase. My concerns were never about insecurity. They were about awareness, caution, and looking out for the people I care about.
