Acts of Kindness: A 98-Year-Old’s Birthday Celebration Twice Over

I went to the Upper East Side today to visit my mother-in-law as she recovers in the hospital. Before seeing her, my wife and her uncle met up for brunch at a diner.

As we sat and ate, we overheard a woman talking about her birthday. She was turning 98 years old. A gentleman arrived for his brunch, and she mentioned that she had missed him at her birthday party. Upon hearing this, he decided to do something special—he ordered a cake and gathered the entire staff to sing “Happy Birthday” to her again. They had already done it earlier, but since she said he missed it, he made sure she got to experience it while he was there. I thought this was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture.

Afterward, I spent a few minutes speaking with this incredible woman. I picked her brain about what she had witnessed during her teenage years and asked if she would choose immortality in her prime physical form forever. Her response was, “I have already lived long enough.”

I can’t even imagine all the things she has seen over the decades. Looking back, I really wish I had gotten her information—I would have loved to invite her on my podcast.
