Now that fall has arrived here in the Northeast the temperatures are dipping, the sunny days are shorter, and it also becomes a good time to re-evaluate eating habits. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of eating more comfort food during the colder weather while consuming many more calories. We all tend to settle into habits and slow down a bit during the fall and winter season as the warmer sunny days dwindle away. That being said, it’s also a good time to try out different varieties of food, and there are many vegan options out there to discover, especially when one gets tired of the “meat and potatoes” meals many of us eat in the winter season. One such place I discovered recently was Cafe Blossom located in the West Village, NYC. Although I typically prefer meat-based meals, I have found a few vegan restaurants over the past few years to be highly enjoyable, serving up delicious plates of meatless fare. Eating vegan can be a nice change of pace, while also being on the healthier side, and can taste flavorful too. Here is a recent discovery of mine that I was recognized for with a Review Of The Day on Yelp.
Cafe Blossom
I have thought about eating a bit more of a “cleaner” diet and sometimes consider trying out vegan or vegetarian options, but it’s been a challenge to fully commit. For one night, though, I was pleased to try something different.
Cafe Blossom made me think that I could actually enjoy the organic vegan lifestyle. The dishes I tasted last night were impressive and delicious!
Everything we ordered was tremendous and full of flavor. At times, vegan food can seem bland, but the menu here is quite eclectic with intense aromas and tastes. Even the setting with its subdued red walls, quiet music, and candlelit atmosphere offers an ambiance that enhances the experience of exploring vegan cuisine.
Looking over the menu, we wanted to try everything! Unfortunately, we had to settle for a few dishes. Our waitress, Penelope, was very sweet and friendly and offered perfect suggestions for our first meal here. She recommended some drinks, and we started off with the Strawberry Berry Sangria, which was refreshingly vibrant and included blueberries as well.
For an appetizer, we chose the Chickpea Fritters with sautéed ratatouille. This dish was different from what I expected, with a creamy consistency and a lightly crispy exterior. We had three pieces and playfully debated over who would get more.
The main plates were both terrific and distinct. The Seitan Marsala came with a sage potato cake, sautéed garlic spinach, poached pear, shallot, and thyme marsala reduction. The sautéed Mushroom Risotto included scallion, miso mustard cashew cream, fried leek, carrot, and cilantro. The seitan had an intense smoky flavor, perfectly complemented by the other components. It offered a unique experience that made me momentarily forget about meat or poultry. The portions were generous with no skimping. The risotto was creamy, rich, and full of mushrooms with bold flavors. Though filling, I kept enjoying it until I had to stop.
As sides, we had sautéed asparagus with lemon and grilled corn with a chipotle style sauce. Both dishes wonderfully accompanied the meal and enhanced the overall experience.
We were quite full after this and couldn’t make room for dessert, though I noticed other diners enjoying it enthusiastically. I’ll have to visit again.
I should also mention that the plating presentation was visually pleasing. Plates made of slate, bowls with a modern look, and wine bottles on the table used as water vessels added to the aesthetic. The location is a chic bistro with a warm feel, fitting the West Village vibe. Candles were everywhere, creating a cozy ambiance. They also have a full bar with organic beers and wines to choose from. There is even a downstairs room ideal for private parties and group dining. The bathrooms were clean and elegant, with a coed sink area in between.
Overall, this was a well-executed meal. The food choices are fully vegan with unique flair and expertly prepared. While it may cost a bit more, the quality and experience make it worthwhile. From attentive service to stylish yet simple surroundings and fantastic food selections, Cafe Blossom is a joy for the palate and a must-visit for those who enjoy vegan cuisine or want to try a meatless meal for a change.
