Air Force Boot Camp Was No Joke: A Few Stories That Prove It

02/24/2026, 9:44 am Angel Rodriguez 0

People joke that the Air Force has an easy Boot Camp. Maybe physically. But getting choked with your own chain for forgetting to tuck in your keys? That wasn’t easy. Here’s what it was really like.

Air Force Basic Training: Why Shouting at Your Drill Instructor Is a Big Mistake

10/29/2019, 7:08 am Angel Rodriguez 0

Before Air Force boot camp, I was in the Marine Corps poolie program, but a recruiter’s bad behavior made me switch. At Air Force training, I quickly learned yelling at instructors wasn’t welcome. If you’re heading there, remember: speak clearly, stay respectful, and expect a different kind of discipline.

USAF Basic Training Running Experience: Why I Prefer Marine Corps Cadence on the Road

10/25/2019, 7:10 am Angel Rodriguez 0

I expected to run and sing cadence in Air Force basic training like in the Marines, but that wasn’t the case. Instead, I improvise with Marine Corps cadences on my runs, swapping out words to fit the Air Force. What do you listen to when you hit the road?

USAF Basic Training vs. Marine Corps Boot Camp: Which Is Harder?

08/30/2019, 7:13 am Angel Rodriguez 0

As an Airman who trained alongside Marines, I can say Air Force basic training is challenging but not as physically intense as Marine Corps boot camp. The Marines run more, train harder, and push physical limits more than we do. It’s important to be honest about these differences.

USAF Basic Training: How Beating Reveille Became a Survival Strategy

08/29/2019, 7:34 am Angel Rodriguez 0

During basic training, every second counts. We found clever ways to save time, like sneaking early bathroom breaks and shaving before reveille. These small tricks made a big difference, helping us survive the grind and avoid trouble during inspections. It was all about resilience and beating the clock.

USAF Basic Training: Overcoming Ingrown Nail Pain During Boot Camp

08/23/2019, 7:04 am Angel Rodriguez 0

Dealing with painful ingrown toenails during Air Force basic training was tough, especially with tough instructors. After surgery, I pushed through, marching and running despite the pain. Now recovering from wisdom teeth removal, I’m reminded how amazing the body is when it has to keep going.

USAF Tech School: Lessons Learned Marching the Flight as a New Rope

08/21/2019, 7:25 am Angel Rodriguez 0

During tech school, I learned the ropes of leading and marching my flight, overcoming nerves and mistakes. Marching through loud jet noise taught me how to command attention. By the end, I gained confidence and skill, making the experience both challenging and rewarding.

Military Stories: Using Military ID for Free NYC Train Rides

07/19/2019, 7:08 am Angel Rodriguez 0

Back when I was in the Air Force reserves, NYC often let me ride the train for free. In uniform or civilian clothes, showing my military ID usually got me through. Not sure if it was a law or just a courtesy, but it felt like a small perk for serving.

Episode 116 – BJJ Safety, Abuse Concerns, and Changing Attitudes in the Jiu Jitsu Community
by@Angelrtalk

Some time ago, I wrote a post saying I wasn’t completely comfortable with my wife training jiu jitsu with men. The reaction from many practitioners was intense. I was called insecure, and some people insisted that abuse simply doesn’t happen in the BJJ community.

Since then, I’ve seen more and more posts and discussions acknowledging that jiu jitsu has had issues with grooming and abuse, and that these problems have existed for years. It’s been interesting to watch that shift. When I first shared my concerns, a lot of higher belts and experienced practitioners dismissed my perspective. Now, many of those same types of voices openly recognize that these problems are real.

That contrast is hard to ignore. I talk about it in more detail in episode 116.

I saw something similar during my time in the military. In environments that are heavily male dominated, with very few women, the risk of misconduct can increase. My concerns were never about insecurity. They were about awareness, caution, and looking out for the people I care about.
