Finding Small Moments of Joy After Loss

We lost our dog six months ago, and I’m still working through the grief. She was my emotional support dog, my companion, and losing her has left a real hole in my life. The thought of getting another dog brings up a lot of complicated feelings right now. Some nights are harder than others. Last night I found myself awake until 3am, just sitting with how much I miss her.

I’m not ready to bring another dog into our home yet. That might change down the road, but for now I’m taking things one day at a time. What’s helped me is spending time around dogs in low pressure situations. Puppy yoga classes and adoption events have become a way for me to be around that energy without making any big decisions. I get to see dogs being playful and joyful, and it reminds me of the good times without adding to the weight I’m carrying right now.

Grief after losing a pet doesn’t follow a timeline. Some people bounce back quickly and some of us need more time. I’m learning to be okay with where I’m at in the process. These small moments matter. They keep me connected to something I loved without forcing me into anything I’m not ready for.
