There was a stretch when Funkmaster Flex seemed to be everywhere. He showed up on track after track, and many of those records became iconic club anthems. It was his moment, and he made the most of it.
Listening back now, it feels different. Scrolling through a hip-hop playlist, his voice comes up constantly. The shouting, the ad-libs, the talking over the beat — sometimes it adds intensity and personality. Other times it feels excessive and distracting.
Some songs still sound great. On others, it comes off as over the top. Even something good can lose its appeal when there’s too much of it.
