In the dark

This series revolves around a woman who is blind and covers all aspects of her life. The plot is kind of like a murder mystery drama, with some humor embedded into it. The main character, Murphy, spends a lot of time drunk, she has a lot of random sex, she’s extremely selfish and difficult to get along with, but at the center of it all she’s a good person who struggles with intimacy and friendship.

This show, much like the Eternals movie does something that not many shows have done in the past. It highlights what life is like with a disability. As we raise awareness around race, gender and other marginalized spaces, I’m happy to see that Marvel is being inclusive of people with disabilities. The Eternals featured someone who was deaf and on this series we have a main character who is blind and living her life mostly independently.

The actress playing Murphy is not actually blind and the show understandably received some heat for that. But they claimed that they auditioned blind actresses and went with her based on the actual performance and delivery.

I don’t want to get too into that as it could be its own blog post, but I think it is really cool that these shows are more regularly including characters from the disability community. This is great for educating an uninformed public which may not be aware what living life with a disability is like.

In these two shows, you’ll find that you have two powerful women, who are both living with disability. One of them is an actual Superhero, an Eternal. The other is a superhero in her own right, but I won’t be giving away any spoilers.

One thing that I have learned over the past few years is that the average person out here has no idea what the disability community has to deal with on a daily basis. We take so much for granted, not because we are bad people, but because we simply don’t know. Shows like In the dark and movies like The Eternals while entertaining us also serve the purpose of educating us. I think that is pretty important and awesome because the Lord knows that we as a society need to be educated.

Totally amazing show, check it out!
