I came across a saying recently that caught my attention and made me think. It’s nice to be important, but more important to be nice.
Simple. Straightforward. And honestly, worth sitting with for a minute.
Maybe it resonated because of how much the world around us seems to have forgotten it. Everything today is about status, clout, and who has the most impressive title in the room. Kindness has quietly been pushed to the back of the line like it’s somehow less valuable than a good LinkedIn headline.
But that saying got me reflecting.
I’ve been around long enough to see both types of people up close. The ones who lead with ego and the ones who lead with character. And every single time, without fail, it’s the ones who made you feel respected and seen that stay with you. Not the ones who made sure you knew how important they were.
Titles change. Status fades. The way someone made you feel never really leaves.
Kindness isn’t soft. It isn’t weakness. If anything, staying decent under pressure takes more strength than throwing your weight around ever could. The real measure of a person shows up in the quiet moments. How they treat someone who can do nothing for them. How they carry themselves on a bad day. Whether they still remember that the people around them are human too.
Being important might get you in the room. Being kind is what makes people glad you’re there.
