Kevin Hart has a show on Netflix called Funny AF, and it is pretty entertaining overall. The premise is that Hart wants to find the next generation of up-and-coming comedians, but here is where things get a little confusing. A lot of the comics on the show, especially the funnier ones, are in their late 30s and in some cases their 40s. Hart himself is 46, so when he talks about passing the baton, he is essentially passing it to people who are pretty much his own generation. That part does not quite add up.
The other thing that stood out to me was the judging. Some of the comics they praised and put over were, in my honest opinion, not that funny. And this is not just me talking. My wife agreed on more than a few of them. There were one or two in particular that were just cringe-worthy. Nothing remotely humorous about what they were saying or doing. I am not going to name names because I have no interest in raining on anyone’s parade, but I was genuinely surprised those performers were chosen over some of the others in the room who were clearly funnier by a wide margin.
It makes me wonder if there is something else going on with how the selections were made, whether it is about shaking things up, creating a certain dynamic, or something else entirely. Because I do not buy that Hart and his team have some elite level of comedy perception that the rest of us are missing. Funny is funny. And some of these people were not it.
By the way, by the time they got to the semifinals, the ones remaining were all solid. Our choices are aligning at this point.
