[rating:5]

NYCTalking was invited to a press showing of the one woman show “Lady Luck is a Whore.” This is a show performed solely by

The show opens with an original ukulele song, apparently titled “jerk.” It’s a catchy tune where Leanne talks about some challenging people she has met along the way. Then the lights go dark, a big band-style song plays, lights come back up dimly, and she adds or removes a clothing item before lights return fully. This pattern continues throughout the show. Leanne transitions through a variety of characters and scenarios. For example, her characters range from her captivating dad and his advice to a playful performance set in a clothing dressing room at a department store. I particularly enjoyed that performance. While strip teases to rock music are not usually my preference, Leanne’s delivery was very engaging.

Throughout the show, we meet several characters from Leanne’s life. She convincingly portrays other people, both male and female, often with just a shirt or top change. My favorite was her dad. Although I never met him, after watching Leanne’s impersonation, I imagine he was quite an interesting character. She does an excellent job capturing his mannerisms. We also meet Leanne’s mom, portrayed as a humorous and engaging character, with lines such as: “Why are those women looking at your dad if they know he’s married to me?”

We also encounter several Angels and at one point even God. Leanne uses a creative motif where she “dials up heaven” when facing a problem. Usually, God is busy with other concerns like cats stuck in trees and cannot answer the phone. The Angels typically respond, but they are often not very helpful. Leanne shares stories about her marriages and divorces, emphasizing that she now prefers to date. She presents herself as a confident and charming woman, and one could conclude that those men who let her go have missed an opportunity.

This show was part of the solo festival, which hosted 100 different solo shows this year. I plan to see another show from the festival. I recommend watching this show if you have the chance. I came with my wife and two friends; we all had a great time, sharing many laughs. Considering it is a one-person performance, you can’t help but be impressed by Leanne’s talent and stage presence. You leave feeling like you’ve experienced much more than just one performer.

After the show, we went to the lounge and met Leanne and Susanne Pinedo (Public Relations), along with others. It was a pleasant evening and a welcome break in the workweek. Leanne is down to earth and personable. The entire event was very enjoyable, and I look forward to seeing more from her. She is very talented, and I expect to see great things from her. If you get the chance, look up “Lady Luck is a Whore.” Let us know what you think if you’ve seen it or plan to see it.
