Real leaders set the standard by leading through example. Not everyone understands this, and it shows in the way their teams function. Leadership is not about titles or authority. It is about respect earned through action.
The military offers a clear example. Soldiers often respect their sergeants more than some officers. The reason is simple. Sergeants are there in the thick of it, guiding, correcting, and standing shoulder to shoulder with their people. Many officers, on the other hand, rely on rank alone, overlooking that respect must be earned. History has shown the consequences of such an approach. In some conflicts, officers who treated the rank and file poorly faced serious challenges in maintaining cohesion and support. When leaders fail to value their people, the results can be harmful.
The lesson extends beyond the battlefield. In every setting, whether military, a company, or a small team, people follow leaders who are with them, not just above them. True leadership is earned, not given by position.
