I was at a dog adoption event this past weekend and noticed something that caught my attention. One of the attendees kept leaving her alcoholic drinks and food on the floor while dogs were walking around the area. At one point a dog knocked over her drink and started lapping it up. I walked over, gently pulled the dog away, and asked the staff to clean up the spill. It seemed like a straightforward situation that needed addressing.
A couple minutes later I’m walking around and see the same woman with another drink sitting on the floor. She steps away from it and before long the same dog comes back and starts going after the food on her plate. I walked over to help and was about to move her drink and plate when she came over asking what I was doing with her stuff. I explained that I thought she was done eating and I wanted to throw it out because the dogs kept coming over to investigate. I pointed out that after the first spill, leaving food unattended on the floor didn’t seem like the best idea.
She acknowledged what I was saying and started keeping better watch over her things after that.
One of the foster volunteers thanked me afterward. I appreciated that because honestly the whole reason I stepped in was to protect the animals. Dogs can get seriously hurt or worse from consuming alcohol. That’s not about being difficult or making a fuss. It’s about keeping the dogs safe.
The situation made me think about what responsible pet ownership looks like. If someone isn’t paying attention to basic safety around dogs at a public event, it raises questions about whether they’re ready for the responsibility of owning one. It’s not my call to make, but these kinds of details matter when it comes to whether an animal goes home with someone who’ll take proper care of it.
