There is a J. Cole song called Love Yours that has always stuck with me. The message is simple but cuts deep. No matter how much you acquire, there will always be something bigger and better out there, and if you spend your life chasing it you will never truly be satisfied. Happiness lives in appreciating what you already have. That is the whole point of the title.
I was listening to it recently and a thought hit me out of nowhere.
If one of these wealthy people came to you and offered ten million dollars to completely trade lives with you, not just hand you money but take everything that is yours, your relationships, your history, your people, would you do it?
For me the answer was immediate. No.
And I say that as someone who is not wealthy, someone who struggles financially and will probably continue to do so. I am not naive about what financial security would mean. I understand the comfort, the relief, the doors it opens. I would not turn down more money in my own life.
But a trade? Walk away from the people I love, the life I have built, everything that is actually mine? Not a chance.
The people in my life are worth more to me than any number someone could put on a check. That is not something I say lightly. It is something I felt the moment that question crossed my mind.
So I will ask you the same thing. What would you do?
