I was on the subway a few days ago. This lady offered me some candy to buy. I didn’t have any cash on me so I told her I couldn’t buy any. But I tried to strike up a conversation with her. She told me that she’s only been here in the U.S 4 days and she’s trying to make some cash any way she can. She then asked me how to get to Roosevelt on the F train. I provided her directions as best I could.
She spoke spanish, but I noticed that her spanish was somewhat different and I had a bit of a hard time understanding her. It almost sounded like she was speaking a different tongue, but if I listened closely and carefully, I could make out most of what she was saying. Language has always fascinated me. Its so amazing how a different region of the world can speak the same language but sound entirely different to others. I’m not just talking about slang and cultural references, I mean the language as whole.
I wish I could have bought some candy from her, to help her out, but I really didn’t have any cash. I do hope she is doing well and I wish her the best in her new life.
Just a life long New Yorker sharing the journey through my lens. Please take note of a post’s date. The views I express here are subject to change and evolving as I grow and learn.
