The internet, and pretty much anyone interested in equal rights who isn’t living under a rock, has been paying close attention to the speech Jesse Williams gave as he accepted his BET Humanitarian Award.
Reactions have been mixed, reflecting the diversity of opinions in this country. Some have applauded strongly, while others have called the speech divisive. Some argue that Williams’ lighter skin tone affords him certain privileges, while others with darker skin have expressed similar views without the same kind of response. A comparison was even made to Kendrick Lamar’s album.
As with any topic like this, there will be many different viewpoints. I’m pleased to share a response from my friend in the poetry world, J.F. Seary, to Tomi Lahren’s analysis on The Blaze. Her reply offers a thoughtful counterpoint to “Final Thought with Tomi.”
She may have shared her thoughts, but there is still plenty of room for conversation. If you want to discuss Tomi Lahren’s video, Jesse Williams’ speech, or any issues concerning race, colorism, power, politics, or related topics, feel free to post below. You can agree, disagree, challenge, or offer a different perspective — all are welcome.
