Tests for jobs

Yesterday, I spent over an hour taking a series of tests for a role I’m interested in. These tests are required before they’ll even let you talk to a human HR representative.

When I interviewed for the Mayor’s office, I was also presented with a series of issues to try to resolve. I successfully handled all of them in record time. I’m not the best I.T. guy, but I spent a good amount of time on the trading floor at Wall Street, surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the industry. The pressure of the job, plus their intelligence (some of which rubbed off on me), has made me a decent I.T. guy.

I have, however, had tests that were more book-oriented, and I finished school over two decades ago. Those were a bit rougher, and I’ve had some not-so-great experiences. The odd thing is, in my over two decades of working as an I.T. guy, not once has one of those book issues ever come up. So, while I get their intent, at the end of the day, they’re denying themselves a great worker because of some book stuff that isn’t even relevant to the actual job. Their loss.

I’m sure as I continue my job search, I’ll keep being tested, and that’s fine. What is your experience with work and tests?
