I was watching the show Shantaram. This dude was trying to get it together, then has his life ruined because of this woman. When this scene came up and it left me baffled. Like what?
This man had his life reasonably together. Then he crosses paths with the wrong person, everything unravels, and he ends up sitting in a prison cell. And the very woman who set it all in motion looks at him and says “I’ll be okay, don’t worry about me.” WHAT?
She walks away fine. He is the one behind bars. And somehow she is the one offering reassurance to him, that she’ll be okay? What?
The writing does not need to editorialize because the irony does all the heavy lifting. Some people come into your life and leave nothing but wreckage, and by the time you realize what happened you are already in the middle of it. That one line captured it better than a thousand explanations could. Shantaram is something else entirely.
