Steven Seagal looked at Tom Cruise in The Last Samurai and decided that role should have been his. He still hasn’t moved past it.

In a resurfaced interview that keeps making the rounds online, Seagal laid out his case for why he saw the casting as a Hollywood oversight. His reasoning was straightforward on the surface, he was raised in Japan, trained in martial arts, and held the title of master. Cruise, according to Seagal, had none of those credentials.

Seagal even claimed he got 450,000 phone calls from people worldwide saying the role was made for him and wondering how it ended up going to someone else.

Meanwhile, Cruise put in the work. He trained five hours a day for a full year to master sword fighting and horseback riding. The film went on to gross over 454 million dollars worldwide and earned four Oscar nominations. By any standard, it was a massive success.

Seagal still doesn’t seem particularly impressed. That interview keeps circling back through the internet, finding new audiences every few months and reigniting the debate.

The confidence itself is worth noting. Misguided as it is, and thank the heavens he didn’t get the call. The movie was actually great, and I’d hate to imagine what it would have been if he were cast.
