I recently watched The Devil’s Brigade, and the funny thing is I only pulled it up because I got it confused with The Dirty Dozen. I had the name stuck in my head from years back but had the two mixed up. Turned out I was watching the wrong film, but that ended up being a good thing because The Devil’s Brigade is its own solid movie that holds up well.
The basic premise follows a group of misfit soldiers who get thrown together into what is supposed to become an elite combat unit. If you have ever seen The Suicide Squad, you get the general idea. Rejects, troublemakers, guys nobody else wanted. What makes The Devil’s Brigade a little different is the setup. You have one group of wild, unpredictable American soldiers paired with a highly disciplined and professional Canadian unit. Early on, the two sides are basically at war with each other. Pranks, tension, the Canadians trying to maintain order while the Americans are doing their own thing entirely.
But the story earns its payoff. The two groups eventually come together and that shift feels real. They go from adversaries to brothers, and the film handles that transition well without it feeling forced.
This is absolutely a film for people who enjoy older war movies. It has that classic style and pacing that you either appreciate or you do not. I watched it on a flight down to Florida and it was a great way to pass the time. Really good stuff.
