The Filler Word Problem

Speaker podium

You know. Um. You know. These words can turn an otherwise normal conversation into something really hard to listen to. I do it sometimes, but I’m aware of it and try my best to avoid it. These are filler words we use to buy time or figure out what to say next. I’ve read that it’s better to take a moment and gather your thoughts rather than fill the silence with these verbal crutches. I’m working on it myself, and I wish others would too. It would make conversations a lot easier to follow and less distracting overall. When you’re talking with someone and they’re doing it constantly, it catches your attention in the wrong way. You find yourself waiting for them to finish instead of actually listening to what they’re trying to say.

The thing is, most people don’t even realize they’re doing it. It becomes a habit. But once you notice it in yourself, it’s something you can work on. Takes awareness first, then conscious effort. The payoff is worth it though. Cleaner communication, more confidence coming through, and people stay focused on your actual message instead of how you’re delivering it.
