The Island

I’m surprised that I’ve never heard of this film at all, it’s pretty old. It stars Scarlett Johansson and Ewan McGregor. You’ll also see some other recognizable faces in this film.

The story is actually pretty dope and messed up at the same time. It’s about clones who are actually alive and functional while society is told that they are meat bags never achieving consciousness. If you are wealthy enough and can afford it, you could have a healthy clone of yourself created and harvested for whatever body parts the original you requires.

Clearly you can see the moral implications of this situation if the clones were discovered to be alive. The only way this cloning company can stay in existence is by keeping the lie that the clones are never alive or conscious. They are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that end.

Now imagine that two clones realize what’s really happening at this company and somehow manage to escape from the facility? This could be very bad for the company and for sales. So you know they’d do everything in their power to get those “products” back. Meanwhile the clones want to remain alive and also save the others.

That’s the main premise of this film. I thought it was pretty good and definitely worth a watch.

The thing I found most hilarious is that this was filmed in 2005 and they tried to predict how 2019 society would be. They foresaw flying bikes, cars, trains and even perfected cloning technology. Little did they know that instead in 2022 we’d still be battling over oil prices and toilet paper.
