The Mystery of the Disappearing Dog Food

There was a stretch where we thought Peppa was going through her dry food at an unusual pace. Every time we put it out, it seemed to disappear pretty quickly. We kept refilling it and figured she had developed more of an appetite. Then one night I was out there and noticed Peppa acting startled, backing away from her food and water bowl. I looked over and saw them right there: two mice. They’d been stealing Peppa’s dry food for days, maybe longer. I caught one of them in the act.

Thanks to how things worked out, Peppa never got sick and never had an encounter with them. She was pretty timid by nature so I’m guessing she just wanted to stay clear of them, which is actually how I figured out something wasn’t right. I felt her jump back when she sensed they were there. She was trying to work out what was happening, like someone was taking her stuff. Of course we always made sure she ate with us at mealtimes, so breakfast, lunch, and dinner were covered. The dry food we left out was just backup in case she wanted a snack, which she didn’t care much for anyway. So I was surprised to see it disappearing the way it was.

Once I spotted those little bandits, I found where they were getting in, sealed up the holes, and that was the end of it. Our sweet Peppa’s gone now, but I still miss her terribly.
