I just finished The Penguin tonight, and I have to say, it was a pretty good show overall. From beginning to end, it was entertaining, with a lot going on. It kind of felt like Game of Thrones but set in Gotham. This was a really solid continuation of The Batman film, and they did an excellent job with the spinoff. Sometimes, spinoffs end up being even better than the movies they’re based on.
I have to tell you, though—some people are bad and grimy, but The Penguin takes it to a whole other level. He’s a vile, disgusting human being who doesn’t care about anyone but himself. Everything he does is completely self-serving, and he’ll hurt anyone to get what he wants. If you’ve ever seen a heel in the WWF, then you know the type of villain I’m talking about. Even his little smile when he’s doing evil things is just pure evil.
Colin Farrell, along with the makeup and costume team, did a phenomenal job transforming him—I couldn’t even recognize him! The show also brought in some talented actors I hadn’t seen before, and they did an amazing job. The storyline was really strong. If you haven’t seen the show yet, you should definitely check it out. It’s incredible from start to finish, and you’ll see exactly what I mean when I say the Penguin is a vile, disgusting beast.
I actually feel kind of bad for Sophia Gigante. They made her out to be tough and a little bad, but she also had a kind side. She forgave people and spared lives when she could have easily killed them. Her father betrayed her and had her put in Arkham Asylum because she knew what he was doing. Her whole family turned on her, and she just got a really bad break. I found myself rooting for her throughout the show because she didn’t deserve all that. It was terrible what they did to her. Honestly, I would’ve liked it more if she’d had a bigger hand in her father’s death—that would’ve been satisfying.
