Have you heard of these bus tours of the Bronx? These tours operated by Real Bronx Tours are not your typical tours. They focus on highlighting some of the more challenging aspects of the Bronx. The tour guide makes comments like “You shouldn’t walk through here alone” or “This is known as pickpocket park,” along with other candid remarks about the neighborhood.
Having grown up in the South Bronx, I can acknowledge that there are real challenges in my home borough. I experienced many of those challenges firsthand. That said, I find it concerning for a company to offer tours that emphasize only the negative sides of these neighborhoods. It feels like an incomplete portrayal that overlooks the full story.
The Bronx is much more than its struggles. It has a rich history and has produced remarkable individuals like Edgar Allan Poe, Sandra Sotomayor, and Colin Powell. Recently, I attended a wonderful performing arts event just a few blocks from where I grew up, held at the Bronx Museum of Art. By the way, this little girl pictured above was also showing some of her work at that museum. This is a community with creativity and strength, not just a label.
Due to feedback from politicians and the community, the company has reportedly stopped advertising these tours. While the tour may no longer be operating, it is important to stay informed and let others know if you hear anything new. The way the Bronx is represented matters to all of us who call it home.
That is just so wrong in so many ways. 🙁 Very sad that people feel the need to belittle others.
Agreed. I don’t support violence, but you know, if there were ever any bus tires I’d like to see stabbed…… Lol….
