I just finished watching Warcraft today, and the movie definitely had a similar feel to Lord of the Rings in terms of the fantasy storyline. There were some notable differences, but at its core, it was the classic humans versus orcs battle. We saw a few dwarves, though they didn’t play a major role in the plot, and it doesn’t seem like they’ll have much of a presence in any potential future films—if there even are any.
Unfortunately, the movie didn’t perform well with critics or at the box office. It made around $160 million but cost over $500 million to make, so it didn’t break even. That kind of financial outcome makes a sequel unlikely, which is too bad because I thought the movie was pretty good. I enjoyed the story and the world-building.
One of the standout moments for me was Garona’s difficult decision to do what she felt necessary to save the human race. I’m curious whether, in the games or comics, her character reconciles with the human king’s warrior after what happens in the film. It seemed to me that she acted according to what she believed was best for the long term, even if it was hard in the short term.
I’m really disappointed there won’t be a sequel because I genuinely enjoyed this movie and would have liked to see where the story went next. Oh well.
