What to Say If Someone Is Filming in the Locker Room: Your Rights and How to Handle It

I was in the locker room changing when I noticed two guys with tripods set up, filming themselves in the mirror. I walked over and let them know I was about to change and that I would be visible. I said it in a friendly but clear way. I had no intention of appearing in any of their videos or photos.

They assured me they had stopped recording and that the phone was angled so no one else would appear in the frame. I repeated that I did not want to be in any footage and that there could be serious legal consequences if I was. I kept it light, almost conversational, but I was serious, and I think they understood.

I get that people like to take quick pictures in the gym or even in the locker room after training. It is not allowed, but if you choose to do it, make sure no one else is in the shot, especially if they are exposed. I did not approach these guys aggressively, and I was not trying to start anything, but I will not be made the subject of someone’s content without my consent. See what I did there?

Not only is it against gym policy, but it can also be illegal. If I ever found a video of myself out there without my consent, I would pursue every legal remedy available to me.
