I came across a story that caught my attention. A woman with family ties to Iran’s government was arrested by ICE after allegedly celebrating the deaths of US soldiers, calling America the Great Satan, and promoting the Iranian regime. She had a green card and was in the process of applying for citizenship in 2025.
I get freedom of speech. That is foundational to what makes this country work. But something about this situation does not sit right with me.
Here is where my head is at. You flee your country. You seek asylum because you say it is not safe. You get protection. You start building a life here. Then you turn around and attack the country that took you in. You call it Satan. You promote the regime you claimed to escape from. You celebrate when American soldiers die. The contradiction is hard to ignore.
To be clear, I do not think the United States had any business in Iran or that military intervention there was justified. I felt the same way about Iraq. But regardless of how anyone feels about US foreign policy, celebrating the death of soldiers does not sit right with me. Any soldiers. These are people being used as instruments of government decisions that are well above their pay grade. It is tragic when any of them die.
So when someone comes into this country, gets welcomed, gets to build a life here, and then turns around and promotes the very regime she claimed to escape from while celebrating American casualties, that is a contradiction worth talking about.
