When Your Passion Doesn’t Find a Match

I’m 49 years old and I’ve learned something about myself over the decades. I’m a passionate guy. When I care about something, I care hard. Whether it’s work, hobbies, ideas, or just the way I move through my day, I bring intensity to it. That’s who I am.

But here’s the thing nobody really tells you about being that way. It can be isolating when the people around you don’t match that energy. I’m talking about the spouse who nods along but isn’t really invested. The friends who listen politely but don’t get why you’re fired up about something. The family members who see your drive as exhausting rather than inspiring.

For years I thought it was my job to dial it back. Maybe I was too much. Maybe I needed to tone it down so others felt comfortable. I’d pull back my enthusiasm, soften my voice, pretend I wasn’t as interested in things. It never worked. It just left me feeling hollow.

What I’ve realized is that passion isn’t something you switch off. It’s part of your wiring. And the real issue isn’t that you’re too passionate. It’s that you need to find your people, the ones who get it. The ones who match your frequency even if they’re passionate about different things.

That doesn’t mean everyone in your life has to be exactly like you. It means finding at least a few people who understand that being all in on something isn’t a character flaw. It’s a strength. The people worth keeping around are the ones who respect that about you, even if they experience the world differently.

I spent too many years apologizing for caring. I’m not doing that anymore.
