Winning the Lottery and Losing the Plot

So I came across a news story recently that had me shaking my head. Some guy wins $30,000 in the lottery. Good for him, right? Well, here is where it goes sideways. He takes $20,000 of that and buys a gold chain. A single gold chain. He then wears it to a gas station, gets robbed, and loses the chain on the spot.

I get that people want to celebrate a windfall. That part makes sense. But spending two thirds of an unexpected $30,000 on one piece of jewelry and then wearing it in areas where that kind of flash is going to draw serious attention is a decision I cannot wrap my head around.

There are a hundred things you could do with that kind of money. Pay off debt. Move somewhere safer. Build a cushion. Even just put it in a savings account and sleep better at night. Instead, the choice was a chain around the neck and a very predictable outcome.

I really wanted to be surprised by this story. I wanted to read it and think, wow, what a random turn of events. But I just could not get there. Sometimes people make choices that leave the rest of us staring at the ceiling wondering how the math worked in their heads.
