I was speaking with someone and they said something that really resonated with me. “Angel, every year we go to the doctor to get a checkup of our body. We get a checkup of our teeth and so on. So, why is it a stigma or so often neglected to check your head out?”
I had never really thought of it that way. I think people often go to therapy only when things feel overwhelming or something feels wrong. They don’t usually go for a checkup or after a difficult event. We tend to put it off until things become really hard to manage. A perfect example would be me. I had been seemingly fine, just managing life and living normally, until I wasn’t. Now I’m having regular panic attacks. Maybe if I had started therapy earlier or taken better care of my mind, I might not be in this situation.
So, I guess the point of it all is, don’t wait until your mental health reaches a breaking point. Make sure to take care of your mind now. It’s easier to maintain well-being than to recover when things get really tough.
