I used to be a huge wrestling fan when I was a kid. I watched during the era when you had Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, King Kong Bundy, and others. That’s as far as my wrestling experience goes.
Wrestler is a docuseries that highlights an organization called OVW, which stands for Ohio Valley Wrestling. I’d never really heard of this organization before and wasn’t sure if I’d be interested in watching the show. But as a fan of wrestling, I gave it a try.
Their main guy is Al Snow, a former WWF wrestler. I don’t recognize him or his head gimmick from the period I watched wrestling. However, it looks like he was pretty popular, so maybe I just missed him. I wasn’t around for the Attitude Era or anything since then. I did become a little discouraged once I found out that wrestling is scripted or predetermined. Still, these are people doing very hard work, and there is a lot of physicality involved.
Through this series, I was introduced to a bunch of new wrestlers and got a look behind the scenes at what goes into putting together a wrestling show. There were moments where I found myself really moved by the emotional content. For example, the storyline with Haley J and her mother, Maria, was very heavy, and I could feel the emotion between them.
If you’re a fan of wrestling, whether or not you know these characters, I think you’ll enjoy this show. It offers a unique behind the scenes look into a world most of us rarely see. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend watching. I’ve never been to Ohio, and I don’t know if I’ll ever go, but if this show is still around, I’d love to check it out. Maybe it’s what will get me there.
