I deeply respect my in-laws, but for me, only my birth parents can hold the special titles of mom and dad. Those roles mean everything because of their lifelong love and sacrifice. Calling someone else “mom” just isn’t something I can do.
Years ago, my ex-wife made me spaghetti with powdered cheese, which I refused to eat because I was picky then. Looking back, I regret being so difficult and ungrateful. Even now, I occasionally apologize for that night, wishing I had been more understanding.
Having special needs students in my class is always a joy, even if staying in sync can be a challenge. Sadly, sometimes others don’t understand and act disrespectfully. As an instructor, it’s important to protect and support everyone, standing up against bullying with kindness and firmness.
