X-Men movie review

I recently rewatched the original X-Men movie from 2000 and I still enjoyed it very much. I still remember when they first cast Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, I wasn’t too crazy about that casting decision. Mind you, it’s not because I have anything against Hugh, but because he didn’t have the height, build or look of Wolverine. Wolverine is like 5′ 3″, he’s short and stocky. Hugh Jackman is like 6 feet tall and he’s long and lean fit looking. I don’t know if I just got used to him in the role, but now I really do enjoy him as the character. In fact, it tore me up when I watched Logan and how that film went.

Watching this older film was a great pleasure for me and my son, but it was also a sad reminder that many of these iconic actors are not playing these amazing roles anymore. Patrick Stewart, on the Jim Norton show said that he was also throwing in the towel after Logan. Though I’ve read some rumors that he might be back in some multiverse type film. Hugh Jackman is no longer playing the Wolverine. Hell, we don’t even know what the hell is going to happen now that Disney has acquired all these X-Men characters from Fox.

I would have loved to see these guys come together with The Avengers and seeing how that went. But we have already lost Iron Man and Captain America from the MCU movies. I understand that these guys get tired of playing the same roles and don’t want to renew their contracts and stuff, but as a huge fan I think that sucks.

We did see that the X-Men franchise took an entirely different path by taking us back in time to when the characters were young and built a few films on that timeline. I’ve watched all the movies they’ve made but I felt that they lost some of the continuity that the earlier ones had. I don’t know if it was because of a switch in directors or what exactly happened. I don’t follow films at that level, but the trajectory changed. I’m not saying I hate it or that I didn’t enjoy the films. Don’t misunderstand me, I still enjoyed them all. Yet it felt like once they broke off into those younger character versions like First class, Days of forgotten past, that it was just a whole different set of films.

All that being said I think this film stands the test of time. The cinematography is not as good as those brand spanking new MCU movies that we’ve so gotten used to seeing. However, considering the fact that this is a 20-year-old film I’d say they did a pretty damn good job back then.

I remember how I felt annoyed when the Marvel franchise was making an Ironman film. I wanted them to keep building up on the X-Men franchise because at that time I really didn’t know much about The Avengers. The X-Men were the only characters I knew at the time.

I really thought that they were going to drop the ball and the films were going to suck because they chose Iron Man as the main character. At the time, Iron Man was a character I really didn’t know much about. Truth be told, I never really followed comics until I got older.

So I was wrong on that and Iron Man, Tony Stark, is now actually one of my favorite characters. This is particularly true due to the fact that Robert Downey Junior did such an amazing job in portraying Stark. Downey is hands down the main reason that I got interested in Iron Man and actually started reading his comics.

I didn’t know much about or care about Thanos either, but he’s proven to be an amazing villain and I really enjoyed him in the films as well. I’ve also read quite a few Thanos comics and novels. So yeah, I was very wrong on that one and I’m glad they took the chance because I love The Avengers now, what’s left of them.

Given their current track record so far, one can only expect that Disney is going to do some amazing things with the X-Men franchise in the future. I very much look forward to that.
